MAT+SAR is a Volunteer Non-Profit Organization Dedicated to Search and Rescue as a Public Service to the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the State of Alaska.
MAT+SAR was formed in 2003 at the suggestion of the Alaska State Troopers to assist the Troopers and other local first-responders with search, rescue, and recovery missions. Since the Alaska State Troopers are responsible for all Search & Rescue operations within Alaska, they rely heavily on volunteer search and rescue organizations. Within the last seven years, over 4,168 lives have been saved by the Alaska State Troopers with the assistance of dedicated search and rescue volunteer groups such as MAT+SAR.
MAT+SAR offers rapid and professional response using trained and certified Search and Rescue team members. MAT+SAR utilizes the additional resources of all terrain vehicles (ATV’s) and snowmobiles to transport its search teams, and the subjects in both the rural and remote areas of the State.
Many of the MAT+SAR volunteer members are emergency medical technicians, nurses, former military professionals, and SAR personnel with prior experience. Much of the technical training for the volunteers is centered around courses provided through National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR) and other certified courses that are offered within the SAR community.
MAT+SAR is dedicated to serving our neighbors by being trained, certified and ready to respond to emergency situations. Additionally, every trained SAR member is one more available resource ready to respond to an earthquake or other natural disaster.
MAT+SAR additionally supports Project Lifesaver, a nationwide program to assist in locating, through the use of electronic equipment, those individuals who are suffering from Alzheimers, dementia, and other conditions, who have wandered off from their home or health care facility.
The State of Alaska is a great playground for the outdoor enthusiast. There are hikers, bird watchers, berry pickers, gatherers, hunters, ATV riders, and many others who enjoy the outdoors. Unfortunately, some of the individuals involved in these activities get either lost, hurt or both.
The Alaska terrain and the uncertain weather conditions can quickly turn what was to be a fun outdoor adventure into one of survival. MAT+SAR has the trained personnel and equipment available to meet the demands of the Alaska backcountry to effectively respond to emergencies.
MAT+SAR is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization supported by voluntary contributions. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation please mail your contribution to the address below or click here to donate via paypal. Please call or email if you have equipment to donate.
